Clinical Neuropsychology

Clinical Neuropsychology
By:"Kenneth M. Heilman James E. Rooks Jr. Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Clinical and Health Psychology","Chair of the Department of Neurology Residency Program University of Florida College of Medicine Edward Valenstein William L. and Janice M. Neely Professors of Neurology, Gainesville"
Published on 2003-02-05 by Oxford University Press, USA

Clinical Neuropsychology comprehensively reviews the major neurobehavioral disorders associated with brain dysfunction. Since the third edition appeared in 1993 there have been many advances in the understanding and treatment of neurobehavioral disorders. This edition, like prior editions, describes the classical signs and symptoms associated with the major behavioral disorders such as aphasia, agraphia, alexia, amnesia, apraxia, neglect, executive disorders and dementia. It also discusses advances in assessing, diagnosing and treating these disorders and it addresses the brain mechanisms underlying these deficits. A multi-authored text has the advantage of having authorities write about the disorders in which they have expertise. The fourth edition adds new authors and five entirely new chapters on phonologic aspects of language disorders, syntactic aspects of language disorders, lexical-semantic aspects of language disorders, anosognosia, hallucinations and related conditions. This is the most comprehensive edition of this text to date. It will be of value to clinicians, investigators, and students from a variety of disciplines, including neurology, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, psychiatry, and speech pathology.

Classic Cases in Neuropsychology

Classic Cases in Neuropsychology
By:"Chris Code","Yves Joanette","André Roch Lecours","Claus-W Wallesch","Neurologist Department of Neurology Claus-W Wallesch"
Published on 2004-08-02 by Psychology Press

The importance of detailed examination and theoretical interpretation of the single case has been increasingly recognized in neuropsychology. This book brings together in one volume discussion of the classic cases which have shaped the way we think about the relationships between brain, behaviour and cognition. The single cases covered may be ancient or modern, famous or less well-known. But the book is comprehensive in its coverage of contemporary neuropsychological issues. Represented are classic cases in language, memory, perception, attention and praxis. Some of the cases included are rare, or have acted as catalysts to the development of theory. Some have remained the definitive case; many were the first of their type to be described and gave rise to the development of new syndrome entities. Some are still controversial. In some instances, the cases resulted in major paradigm shifts. Some, while still highly influential, were misinterpreted. But most of them were read only by a few in their original form. Each chapter highlights the relevance of the case for the development of neuropsychology, describes the particular features of the case that are interesting and discusses the theoretical implications.

Ethical Issues in Clinical Neuropsychology

Ethical Issues in Clinical Neuropsychology
By:"Shane Bush","Michael Drexler"
Published on 2002-01-01 by CRC Press

Until now there has been no single volume in which a broad and comprehensive scope of ethical questions in neuropsychology is discussed. These editors have sought to fill that gap, calling upon leading thinkers in the field of neuropsychology and ethics. Ethical Issues in Clinical Neuropsychology affords the seasoned practitioner as well as the beginner a broad sampling of research and commentary on the ethical dilemmas involved in the clinical practice of Neuropsychology. Part 1 presents ethical issues that arise in the provision of neuropsychological services irrespective of setting, whereas Part 2 concentrates on the unique ethical challenges that attend practice with specific populations. Each chapter offers a rare view into the actual practice of Neuropsychology and the examples highlight an oft-quoted observation at Ethics Committee meetings that good clinical practice is good ethical practice. Carefully crafted vignettes allow the reader to apply these concepts to a myriad of situations confronting practicing clinical neuropsychologists. The discerning reader of Ethical Issues in Clinical Neuropsychology should have no difficulty translating between the 1992 and the proposed ethics code. This is a volume that will be a meaningful addition not only to the libraries of graduate students, interns, and postdoctoral fellows but also to the reference shelves of established practitioners and those preparing for board certification examinations in neuropsychology. This book will be of interest to neuropsychologists, rehabilitation psychologists, clinical psychologists and ethicists.

Handbook on the Neuropsychology of Aging and Dementia

Handbook on the Neuropsychology of Aging and Dementia
By:"Lisa D. Ravdin","Heather L. Katzen"
Published on 2012-09-14 by Springer Science & Business Media

With the aging of the baby boomers and medical advances that promote longevity, older adults are rapidly becoming the fastest growing segment of the population. As the population ages, so does the incidence of age related disorders. Many predict that 15% - 20% of the baby-boomer generation will develop some form of cognitive decline over the course of their lifetime, with estimates escalating to up to 50% in those achieving advanced age. Although much attention has been directed at Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, it is estimated that nearly one third of those cases of cognitive decline result from other neuropathological mechanisms. In fact, many patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease likely have co-morbid disorders that can also influence cognition (i.e., vascular cognitive impairment), suggesting mixed dementias are grossly under diagnosed. The Clinical Handbook on the Neuropsychology of Aging and Dementia is a unique work that provides clinicians with expert guidance and a hands-on approach to neuropsychological practice with older adults. The book will be divided into two sections, the first addressing special considerations for the evaluation of older adults, and the second half focusing on common referral questions likely to be encountered when working with this age group. The authors of the chapters are experts and are recognized by their peers as opinion leaders in their chosen chapter topics. The field of neuropsychology has played a critical role in developing methods for early identification of late life cognitive disorders as well as the differential diagnosis of dementia. Neuropsychological assessment provides valuable clinical information regarding the nature and severity of cognitive symptoms associated with dementia. Each chapter will reinforce the notion that neuropsychological measures provide the clinician with sensitive tools to differentiate normal age-related cognitive decline from disease-associated impairment, aid in differential diagnosis of cognitive dysfunction in older adults, as well as identify cognitive deficits most likely to translate into functional impairments in everyday life.

The study of cognitive deficits provides some of the most compelling data concerning the structure and function of the human mind. This admirable book explains why. Its chapters, by top researchers in cognitive neuropsychology, summarize the state of the art in all of the major domains in the field. 'The Handbook of Cognitive Neuropsychology' is invaluable to researchers inside and outside of this area and to those who are interested in the latest word on research on mind and brain. This handbook fills a niche in the neuropscyhology literature. The book is invaluable to researchers inside and outside of this area and to those who are interested in the latest word on research on mind and brain |o Steven Pinker, Peter de Florez Professor, Department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences, MIT, and author of How the Mind Works. The abilities and disabilities of individuals who have suffered neurological damage have long provided a wealth of fascinating and useful insights into the nature and structure of human cognition and its neural bases. Indeed, data from impaired performance have often played a central role in our understanding of the skills and abilities of the human mind/brain. This volume reviews the full range of cognitive domains that have benefited from the study of deficits. Chapters cover not only the better-known domains such as language and memory, but also object recognition, action, attention, and consciousness as well as musical, numerical, spatial, and temporal cognition. The authors consist of an international collection of researchers who, in each chapter, present the central issues of cognitive processing in their domain of expertise and highlight the contributions that studies of impaired performance have made to our understanding of these issues. In addition to the survey of cognitive domains, this volume also includes chapters that address foundational and historical topics as well as questions regarding future directions for the enterprise of cognitive neuropsychology.

Neuropsychology of PTSD

Neuropsychology of PTSD
By:"Jennifer J. Vasterling","Chris Brewin"
Published on 2005 by Guilford Press

The emotional and behavioral symptoms associated with PTSD have been widely studied, but until recently, much less was known about neuropsychological aspects of the disorder. This volume brings together leading experts to synthesize current knowledge on how trauma affects the brain. Integrating compelling insights from neurobiology with clinical and cognitive perspectives, the book presents cutting-edge theoretical advances with major implications for assessment and treatment. Clearly written and well documented, the volume explores the emergence of neuropsychological dysfunction in specific trauma populations: children, adults, older adults, and victims of closed-head injury. Coverage encompasses a range of chronic problems with memory, attention, and information processing, including biases in the ways that PTSD sufferers attend to and remember emotionally relevant information, as well as how they encode and retrieve trauma-related memories. Throughout, authors back up their arguments with salient empirical research, highlighting key findings from functional neuroimaging and electrophysiology. Methodological dilemmas and controversies are also addressed, such as the challenges of studying a disorder with frequent psychiatric and medical comorbidities. Timely and authoritative, this comprehensive work provides vital knowledge for trauma specialists and other researchers and clinicians, including neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists. It will also be of interest to advanced students in these areas.
